Itō Jakuchū (1716–1800) was a highly original Edo-period painter known for his vivid portrayals of birds, animals, and plants. Working outside traditional schools, he combined keen observation of nature with bold color and intricate detail, challenging conventional Japanese painting. Influenced by Buddhist thought, his work expresses a deep reverence for life, and today he is regarded as a pivotal figure whose singular vision expanded the possibilities of Japanese art.
